Rudi's parents and his little sister had to flee from their homes in East Prussia, during the Second World War, finally arriving in the safety of the British Sector of Germany. Rudi was born in Lübeck, after the war had ended. In his first years the family lived in one-room, provided by locals, to help these refugees.

This is the story of his journey growing up, and how he escaped from all the sadness into a life full of adventures.
A large shadow lay over his upbringing, as endless stories of death, loss and devastation circulated between his parents, relatives and friends.

The family moved to Hamburg, where he grew up, between the ruins of the devastated city.
After settling in his new home in a large block of council flats, he quickly became aware that money could play a big part in life .Even in his young age, he got involved in a number of pocket money making deals.

After his, not so successful school years, he started his commercial life as an apprentice, in the centre of Hamburg. This was interrupted through the compulsory military service, where he witnessed the painful division of Germany.
Through some old friendships he got involved into dubious businesses and started to see the darker side of life.
