Training Circular 3-22.69 is an intriguing manual describing how soldiers can develop a skills approach to critical thinking, problem-solving, and analysis when it comes to human behavior and their surrounding environment. This knowledge of combat profiling, tactical tracking and enhanced observation techniques equips the individual and unit with a ‘left-of-bang’ capability. In the 2012-2013 timeframe insider attackers were prevalent in Afghanistan. ISAF took a number of approaches to mitigate the instances of Afghan soldiers and police attacking ISAF personnel. One of these approaches was the introduction of two- and five-day courses that taught ‘situational awareness’ – teaching how to recognize the potential of an impending insider attack. Fort Benning now has a course entitled Advanced Situational Awareness and this Training Circular is the course textbook.
