In the beginning, there was no such person as Joan Gibson. The little baby who spent the early months of her life in the Salvation Army Hostel in Edinburgh, her mother having been unable to care for her, was called Eva Taylor. But Eva was adopted by parents who brought her up in Perth, and with them she became Joan Mary Fulton.
In the 86 years that have followed, life has taken Joan on a remarkable, sometimes improbable adventure. As Joan MacKay she taught youth offenders in Wetherby Borstal and helped set up dyslexia teaching centres across the north of England. As Joan Gibson she found herself in Barbados running the Caribbean Dyslexia Centre. And all this while bringing up three children, singing in choirs and doing voluntary work of all kinds.
Now, it’s time for Joan to tell her story, for her own family and friends. It’s one that will surprise them all.
