Meteorology – the study of weather and climate – is perhaps the only science that so continuously and obviously affects our day-to-day existence, but bringing science to the general public can be a tricky business. The distinction between description and explanation needs to be kept foremost in mind. Teachers must always be asking themselves “Does that make sense? Is it clear? Does it go far enough?” In this booklet, we have taken a middle road – somewhere beyond simple descriptions of weather phenomena, which may only take a few paragraphs, but well short of deriving the mathematical equations needed to explain the underlying principles. The booklet has been ‘field-tested’ through decades of teaching weather to general education college students and to adults in continuing education courses, with a uniformly enthusiastic reception. It is offered here in a newly edited format, filled with easily understood color graphs and illustrations, and is certain to enrich your appreciation of both the weather and our changing climate.
