(Up-dated April 2026) Marc Bolan ~ as Mark Feld ~ was born in Hackney, London, on 30th September 1947. He was given his first guitar when he was nine, and while at school he played with a trio called Susie & The Hula Hoops, with twelve year old Helen Shapiro as the trio’s vocalist.

In the mid-to-late 1960s, Marc recorded songs as Mark Feld, Toby Tyler and Marc Bolan, and with John’s Children, before he formed Tyrannosaurus Rex with Steve Peregrin Took. The duo’s debut single Debora was a modest no.34 hit in the UK.

It wasn’t until Mickey Finn replaced Steve Peregrin Took, and Tyrannosaurus Rex was shortened to T. Rex, that Marc scored a no.2 hit with what many have claimed to be the first single of the glam rock era, Ride A White Swan. This was followed, in 1971-72, by four chart topping singles: Hot Love, Get It On, Telegram Sam and Metal Guru.

Tragically, just two weeks before his 30th birthday, Marc was killed in a car crash on 16th September 1977. As part of T. Rex, he was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame in 2020.

For the purposes of this book, to qualify as a Top 40 hit, a single or album must have entered the Top 40 chart in at least one of the featured countries. The Top 40 hits are detailed chronologically, according to the date they first entered the chart in one or more of the featured countries. Each Top 40 single and album is illustrated and the catalogue numbers and release dates are detailed for the UK, followed by the chart runs in each country.

The main listings are followed by ‘The Almost Top 40 Singles’, which gives an honourable mention to singles that peaked between no.41-50 in one or more countries, but which failed to enter the Top 40 in any. There is also a points-based list of the Top 15 singles and Top 15 albums, plus a fascinating Trivia section, which looks at the most successful singles and albums and in each of the featured countries.
