“The real loneliness is living among all these kind people who only ask one to pretend!”

The Age of Innocence is a 1920 novel by American author Edith Wharton.
The Age of Innocence, winner of the 1921 Pulitzer Prize, is Edith Wharton's magnificent picture of love and betrayal during the luxurious Golden Age of Old New York, a time when society people "feared scandal more than disease."

Synopsis
The work paints an image of wealthy late-19th-century New York society. Newland Archer, a gentleman lawyer, and the heir of one of New York City's most powerful families, is ready to wed the stunning but traditional May Welland. Archer, however, falls madly in love with the intriguing Countess Ellen Olenska as she makes her way back to New York after a disastrous marriage. Struggling to choose between duty and passion, Archer must make a choice that will either courageously define his life—or ruthlessly destroy it.
