Synopsis:

The Flying Inn by English author G.K. Chesterton, first published in 1914, is set in a future England where "Progressive" Islam dominates the country due to the temperance movement. Alcohol sales are restricted for the poor but the rich can access it with a medical certificate. The story follows Humphrey Pumph and Captain Patrick Dalroy as they travel with a barrel of rum, evading Prohibition by using loopholes in the law. The duo and their followers eventually stop a coup attempt by an Islamic military group.

Excerpt:

‘The sea was a pale elfin green and the afternoon had already felt the fairy touch of evening as a young woman with dark hair, dressed in a crinkly copper-coloured sort of dress of the artistic order, was walking rather listlessly along the parade of Pebblewick-on-Sea, trailing a parasol and looking out upon the sea’s horizon. She had a reason for looking instinctively out at the sea-line; a reason that many young women have had in the history of the world. But there was no sail in sight.’
