Inhaltsangabe

At the heart of James Joyce's Ulysses lurks a gathering of nineteen tiny stories which when taken together, Joyce suggested might be called the Wandering Rocks after the rather treacherous waters of Homeric legend. These little vignettes are a glimpse of Dublin life on 16th June 1904 at around 3.15 in the afternoon.
They are often seen as the geographic centre of the novel but because the main protagonists, Leopold Bloom and Stephen Dedalus are given no greater prominence than other assorted Dublin residents, these stories might be overlooked in comparison to other more infamous passages of the book. Yet like those rocks, they are ignored at peril because when pressed in the right places, they offer up nuggets of inspirational significance to the novel as a whole.
Russell Raphael is no poet. This if nothing else will be clear. But undaunted, he takes a rhyming romp through the stories in the hope that, without claiming anything like definitive interpretation, they may amuse and even shed some slant-wise light and so aid comprehension of Ulysses.
This short collection follows Russell's first book, An Understanding of Ulysses which embodies the 22 lectures he gave in 2020-2021. Russell is the founder of North London Ulysses, an informal group that meets twice weekly both online and, in the pub, to read and discuss Ulysses. Russell lives in Fortis Green near East Finchley, north London, practices law, has a penchant for Wagner and supports West Ham United.
