Praise for dusk

These poems feel like they just poured out of Joy's soul onto the parchment. They are too good for mere paper. She observes things the rest of us never see – especially in the world of spiritual beings. Her compassion for all of nature makes me think of Issa. All of the poems are well-written and insightful. This whole book is like a prayer. I will treasure it.

Joy McCall has written a fine collection of tanka – poems and songs of the heart that touch on birds, clouds, a full moon, her grandmother and a shrine, a medicine man, a Benedictus, some mice, raindrops and the sound of God. A light shines out of her sadness – "an owl song, a shooting star". Long ago a gospel said that at the beginning of all things was the word, and Joy has taken a word given daily by Jonathan Day as her prompt for creativity. Her poems emerge from a world of wonder and pain and magic – and they move us, delight and surprise us with their unflinching personal history of being.
