In the land of Las Vegas, I became a barber and confidante to some of the world’s greatest athletes, entertainers and unsung heroes in the community. Over a 60 year span, I worked in three barbershops: Jackson Street (’61-’71), the Moulin Rouge (’71-’81), and Hair Unlimited (’81-Present) where I developed strong bonds with legendary clients who shared untold stories the general public thought they knew…that is until now.
Growing up in Plain Dealing, Louisiana, an altercation resulted in the permanent loss of vision in my right eye. So in 2019, when the sight in my “good” eye became blurred I was denied entry into the shop for medical reasons. Then a knockout punch came from behind that not even my friends Muhammad Ali or Mike Tyson could have prepared me for.
I was hospitalized after contracting Covid-19 and to make matters worse the State of Nevada issued a mandated closure of all barbershops. For the first time in my life, I was a barber without a chair. During my stay in the hospital, I began to think about my life and the pivotal times that helped make me a barber to legends, a friend to many, and a pillar in my community. These priceless moments are captured within the pages of this book.
