Does God still love us? If so, why is life so difficult? In the post-exilic days of Malachi, the Israelites were experiencing circumstances that made them doubt God's love. The glory of the Davidic empire had long been whittled down to twenty or thirty square miles. In addition, Israel continued under Persian domination. On a national scale, Israel held no weight and was not increasing in power, which made them question many things, including God's faithfulness. Is it vain to serve God?
In response, God points out six categories that Bible scholars call disputations that reveal it's not God who was unfaithful to Israel but Israel who was unfaithful to God. God never stopped loving Israel, but did Israel love God? That was the real question. Did they love Him with their worship? Did they love Him through their marriage? Did they love Him with their finances? The bottom line is that Israel failed to worship God properly because Israel failed to see God properly.
If unwanted circumstances have clouded your spiritual vision, the book of Malachi will help you see clearly again. Even when you can't see or feel it, God loves you with faithful, fierce, and forever love. There is no greater love than a holy and righteous God hanging on a cross to pay the penalty for our disgusting sins. God alone sees the beginning from the end, so where do we look when circumstances are bleak, life feels confusing, and nothing is going the way we planned? We look to the gospel and remember Christ hung on that cross for us. In light of God's love, we trust the Lord to fulfill His promises according to His perfect sovereignty instead of our imperfect plans.
