About the Book
The protagonist, a wealthy bachelor, employs a governess to live in his mansion and look after his niece and nephew. Strange happenings and sightings of apparitions, including a man and a woman, started for the governess after her predecessor's death, which had been shrouded in mystery.

The woman is identified as Miss Jessel, the previous governess, and the man as Peter Quint, the children's uncle's former valet. The two men, Quint and Jessel, have passed away. Throughout the novel, the governess is more and more sure that the children, too, can see the ghosts, but they deny their existence. The supernatural, psychological ambiguity, and the blurry boundary between fantasy and reality are some of the themes explored in the novella. It makes one wonder about the consequences of suppressed urges on one's psyche, the governess's views, and the whole definition of evil.
