Ella, a young girl in Hartville, feels out of place among her friends because she prefers reading in her garden rather than playing outside. One day, while she sits in her treehouse reading, Ella becomes sad seeing other kids playing soccer. Mrs. Jameson, her neighbor, notices her sadness and decides to cheer her up. She tells Ella a story about a butterfly that felt different from its friends, the bird and the bee. The butterfly realizes that their differences make them all beautiful and special. Inspired by the story, Ella begins to love herself and her uniqueness, realizing that her love for books and imagination gives her special qualities to share with her friends. At school the next day, Ella feels better and appreciates everyone's unique strengths, no longer comparing herself to others. She starts to believe in herself.
