A powerful and dangerous bond grows between Henry and the orb. His grades begin to fall, he argues with his friends, and he's rude to every member of his family. When Henry's wishes result in disaster, he tries to walk away from the deceptive globe. But it turns out to be harder than he can imagine. Henry must do whatever it takes to break free from the orb's control, before he loses himself completely.

Awakening of the Orb, by Elizabeth Heitner, is a middle-grade magical realism novel. The compelling story deals with themes that many adolescents can relate to such as blended families, school stressors, and peer relationships. It is also a cautionary tale in that most kids learn about addiction in terms of drugs an alcohol, but not that addiction to other things such as video games, food, and the internet are also possible.

Middle-schoolers will be captivated by the powerful magic of the orb, and Henry's battle with it.
