Transportation systems are undergoing rapid transformation as climate change, technological innovation, and evolving energy systems reshape how mobility is planned and managed. More frequent extreme weather events are placing new pressures on transport infrastructure, while cities seek solutions that improve efficiency, reduce emissions, and support resilient mobility networks. At the same time, closer integration between transportation and energy systems-along with advances in data science-creates new opportunities for modeling complex systems, informing policy, and guiding evidence-based decision-making for sustainable and secure transport futures. Clean Energy and Equitable Transportation Solutions critically examines transport and energy systems through an integrated lens of transportation, energy technologies, data science, and climate modeling. It investigates how transport modeling, energy system transitions, data-driven analysis, and computational climate-transport approaches operate under real-world constraints. Covering topics such as carbon neutrality, geospatial artificial intelligence (AI), and hydrogen-fueled trucking, this book provides a comprehensive academic resource for graduate and doctoral students, researchers, policymakers, and industry professionals across transportation engineering, energy systems, data science, climate science, and related fields.

Dr. Ashish Sharma is the Climate and Urban Sustainability Lead at the Discovery Partners Institute, University of Illinois System, and a faculty member in the Department of Climate, Meteorology & Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. He also holds a joint appointment as a Climate Scientist at Argonne National Laboratory and directs the NSF-UKRI Global Center on Clean Energy and Equitable Transportation Solutions (CLEETS). Named to Crain’s Chicago Business 40 Under 40 in 2023, Dr. Sharma holds a Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering from Arizona State University. His expertise lies in atmospheric sciences, with a focus on regional climate, air quality, and evaluating climate adaptation and mitigation strategies.
Dr. Fabio Miranda is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC), where he is also involved with the Electronic Visualization Laboratory (EVL). Dr. Miranda's research focuses on developing innovative techniques for the interactive visual analysis of large-scale datasets. He combines methods from visualization, data management, geographic information systems (GIS), machine learning, and computer graphics. His primary application area is urban visual analytics, aiming to address various city-related challenges, including those in transportation, mobility, climate, air and noise pollution, and urban accessibility. His work often involves collaboration with domain experts and has garnered media attention. Dr. Miranda earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from New York University in 2018.
John M. Anderies is a professor at Arizona State University with joint appointments in the School of Human Evolution and Social Change, the School of Sustainability, and the School of Complex Adaptive Systems. Professor Anderies directs the Behavior, Economics, and Nature research program at the Beijer Institute of Ecological Economics, a research institute under the auspices of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. He is also Associate Director of the Center for Behavior, Institutions and the Environment at Arizona State University. He joined the ASU faculty in 2002 after receiving his Ph.D. in Mathematics from The University of British Columbia in 1998. His current research interests focus on robust management and robust institutional design for coupled infrastructure systems with applications in transportation, energy, water, and global change.
