This book enters a new terrain of transporting scientific content to an educated public. It can be read as a belletrist book, telling stories about the lives of five individuals. But at the same time these narratives provide a critical description of the evolution of our contemporary political economy. Moreover, this description over 20 chapters follows the scientific task to lead from individual experience, from ‘feeling’, to the awareness of macroeconomic and geopolitical dominance of our social fate. After 40 years of teaching mathematical economics at a university (Micro, macro, game theory, etc.), I decided to write a book that reaches a broader audience than the usual narrow club of specialized scientists working in exactly the same scientific field.
Against my usually necessary habit, I avoided all footnotes in the text to keep it better readable. The links to my scientific papers that loom in the background of the book’s chapters are only provided in an appendix called ‘Mysterious Links’. Some of these links are links to songs with lyrics of songs that play a role in the respective chapter. I think this is necessary to show that scientific content, scientific intuition always relies on feelings too. The intended audience for the book therefore is first of all students of humanities and social sciences (economics, sociology, political sciences, etc.), but also the broader educated public – a much broader market – should be aimed at.
