In this book, the preaching of the ministers of the Free Church of Scotland, in its formative years, is contrasted with the mostly placid preaching of the 18th century. The early ministers of the Free Church were men who understood the importance of gospel preaching. Some of them had once been unconverted ministers. They had come to faith in Jesus Christ after they were ordained. These men understood the danger of assuming themselves to be Christian for reasons other than the work of God in regeneration. Their main aim in preaching became the glory of God in the salvation of sinners by Jesus Christ.
