When Baz Chapman, his old mentor, invites Benjamin Miles to give a speech at the Field Ornithologists of the Pacific conference, Miles knows in his bones he shouldn’t do it: his mentor is eccentric, his speech topic is controversial, and the woman he loves—who doesn’t seem to love him back—works at nearby Stanford. For the sake of his mentor, Miles steels himself and gets on a plane west.
Soon, Baz has Miles taking a road trip down Highway 1. They dine overlooking the vast Pacific, skinny-dip in the ancient pools of a new-age retreat, and search for golden eagles in the Santa Lucia mountains. But when the stink of corruption arises and events turn deadly, Miles must investigate. And what he finds may mean extinction.
