In 1807, William Beatty published his account of the death of Vice-Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. Both in response to other accounts of Nelson's last moments, and in response to criticism from some for his decision to use brandy rather than rum to preserve the body, Beatty's account gives details in the lead-up to the battle, the battle itself, and the autopsy afterwards.
This version of his account has been annotated and indexed by historian AJ Noon, and adds a biography of Beatty, notes on the events before and after the battle, and how the cockpit area of HMS Victory has changed over the years. There are also notes on the surgeon's toolkit of the time, diseases encountered by the sailors, common treatments, and more.
