John Smith, an English teacher running from his past, finds himself in the small, rural town of Mist Valley, a strange place filled with stranger people. The town is hidden by a thick, living cloud of Mist, emanating from the dark forest sitting just past the middle school. As John begins teaching, he realizes that his students are even stranger than their home. There’s a girl who moves through time backwards, a boy made out of television static, a psychic who catches the attention of dark forces beyond comprehension, boy prophesied to defend the town from evil, and half a dozen other weird, weird kids. But, as strange as they are, the students of John’s eighth-grade class are still just children, growing up and trying to figure out who they are, albeit in a town filled with magic.
