After a conclusive nuclear test in New Mexico a fortnight before Hiroshima and Nagasaki, A-Bomb developer Robert Oppenheimer’s Vishnu quote “Now I am become death” echoed ominously again in the 2023 Oscar-winning movie named after him. The 1,000 paper cranes folded as a prayer for peace pale compared to 15,000+ known nuclear bombs. Many of my collected poems imagine scenes relating to such events as their surface subject. Yet the mindset that led us to split the atom in the first place seems somehow rooted in our religious or cellular sense of divided identity.
