The Importance of Being Earnest – A Classic Comic Drama by Oscar Wilde

Widely regarded as Oscar Wilde’s greatest comedy play, The Importance of Being Earnest remains one of the most brilliantly crafted works in English literature. This definitive edition includes a newly annotated text, rich historical insights, and a comprehensive literary analysis—perfect for lovers of classic English drama, witty British comedy, and Victorian satire plays.

Set in Victorian London’s high society, the play follows two bachelors—Jack Worthing and Algernon Moncrieff—who both adopt the name "Ernest" to escape their social obligations. Their comic deception takes a chaotic turn when their alter egos collide in the countryside, leading to hilarious mistaken identity scenarios involving Lady Bracknell, the precocious Cecily Cardew, and the proper yet mischievous Gwendolen Fairfax.

With razor-sharp wit and sparkling dialogue, Wilde delivers a humorous stage play that ridicules the rigid conventions of 19th-century theater and Victorian morality.

• Historical context exploring Victorian satire and the rigid social codes that shaped Wilde’s humor.
• Literary analysis of Wilde’s comic drama literature, including his use of paradox and farce.
• Connections to Wilde’s personal writings, revealing the deeply personal elements behind his comedy.
• Insights into Wilde’s tragic downfall, which followed the play’s wildly successful premiere.

First performed in 1895, The Importance of Being Earnest is often hailed as the most perfectly constructed farcical comedy play ever written. Wilde’s trivial comedy for serious people remains a timeless masterpiece, offering sharp observations on identity, social performance, and the absurdity of moral pretensions.

Whether you are a fan of Oscar Wilde’s plays, classic British humor, or dramatic comedy scripts, this edition is an essential addition to your literary collection.
