The world of Pete Simmons has recently become a little weirder than it was. This is because, ever since he ‘died’ on the operating table, his pet cat and dog have been able to talk to him. And he to them.

Not just ‘Feed me please’ or ‘Can we go walkies over the park now?’ No, Doc the German Shepherd is a tough, loyal, south London street dog with a tendency to break out into song, and Bernard the cat is a self-educated, intellectual social commentator with a waspish sense of humour.

Between them they’ve worked out that Pete’s lodger, an old friend who has just turned up out of nowhere, might be up to no good. And Jess the postwoman is coming under scrutiny too. But while foiling crime isn’t an easy thing for domestic animals, it helps when the bad guys don’t know they have to keep their secrets from the pets as well as their owners.

Now the race is on to protect Pete from serious harm. Bernard has the brains and Doc has the teeth. What could possibly go wrong?
