The truck farms that once surrounded Welby and Henderson in southwest Adams County, Colorado have all but disappeared, replaced by farms covering hundreds of acres and mixed-use development: warehouses, big-box stores, and tract homes. Gone with the truck farms are the original Italian immigrants who, until the 1950s, used horses to till the land and grow some of Colorado’s finest vegetables and fruits.
Genie Petrocco’s stories of her friends, neighbors and family document celebrations, challenges and daily life from the 1940s to the present. By describing the work ethic, religious values, family relationships, lasting traditions, patriotism and culture, the author brings to life the immigrant families that built her hometown.
In Cheers to 80! Petrocco also describes the trailblazing political careers of her cousins, the first and second female Adams County commissioners, Elaine Valente and Alice Nichol.
Cheers to 80! is a loving and lively tribute Petrocco’s ancestors and a lasting gift to her descendants, current residents and historians of the area and period.
