Most of us remember the very special moments in our lives, especially the moment we looked up at someone and instantly became a believer in love at first site. Some of us are even luckier. Some of us find our soulmate.

Sam and Maya are teenagers who have a chance encounter at a high school debate tournament in a small town in northeast Oklahoma. By the end of the evening, they were head over heals in love, a kind of love neither of them had ever experienced before. But too soon, the world separated them. Their lives moved on, Sam’s to Vietnam and Maya’s to the footlights of rock and roll. Not surprisingly, they never gave up trying to find one another. But in the last years of their lives, they are lucky enough to cross trails, with each other and with an aging Navajo medicine man, a haatalii.
