Karma Bum: A Year of Reflection in Bhutan

What happens when a nomad’s journey begins with chaos and ends with calm? In Karma Bum: A Year of Reflection in Bhutan, Jacqueline Hadel takes readers on an intimate, transformative journey through a year spent living, teaching, and reflecting in the Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan.

Her adventure begins with “bad karma”: airline missteps, visa nightmares, and surreal encounters in New York and New Delhi that nearly derail her arrival. Yet, what follows in Bhutan is a profound shift. Through teaching at Royal Thimphu College, quiet mornings in cafés, vibrant festivals, mountain treks, and moments of solitude, she begins to feel her life rebalanced. Acts of kindness, Buddhist rituals, and the slower rhythm of Bhutanese life steadily replace frustration with gratitude, and tension with ease.

Blending vivid storytelling, personal reflection, and photographs, Karma Bum is not just a travelogue but a meditation on impermanence, simplicity, and the ways karma unfolds in daily life.

For those drawn to Bhutan’s mystique, curious about the nomadic life, or seeking a story of inner transformation, this book offers a glimpse into how one year in a hidden kingdom can lighten the spirit and shift the soul.
