We all know the story of the two men who met Jesus on the Road to Emmaus (Luke 24:13-35). There are twenty-three verses to this story, but verse twenty-seven seems to be missing a great deal of information. This verse simply says, “And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.”
Have you ever wondered what, exactly, it was that Jesus talked to those two men about in verse twenty-seven? Well, that is the rest of the story, and much of that information will be covered in this book. Jesus took those two men through all of the Old Testament Scriptures that prophesied of his coming, and while doing so, he told them about when and how those prophesies were fulfilled.
There are over 300 prophecies in the Old Testament regarding Jesus’ walk on earth, his crucifixion, and resurrection. The above Scripture says that Jesus told them about all the Scriptures concerning himself—not a few, and not most—but all of them. Can you imagine how lengthy the biblical story of the Road to Emmaus would have been if Luke had itemized each and every prophecy about Jesus, as well as how and when those prophecies were fulfilled?
Jesus wasn’t the only one to utilize those Old Testament prophecies to advance the Gospel. Shortly after his conversion, Paul spoke of many prophecies concerning Jesus. Likewise, Philip explained the prophecies of Jesus to the Ethiopian Eunuch prior to the Eunuch asking to be baptized.
This book does not include each and every prophecy that Jesus spoke to those two travelers about, but a significant sampling of those prophecies will be found on the following pages. After digesting all of these Scriptures that foretold of Jesus and his sufferings, we can get a much better understanding as to what the two travelers meant when they said, “Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?”
