DEAD RECKONING is a realistic and symbolic novel which juxtaposes the Heart of Darkness which is the cultural history of Iran’s past century, against the three centuries of America’s cultural history. It is a Bildunsgroman that portrays the emotional and philosophical growth of a young man by “dead reckoning,” by juxtaposing the corruption of the old world against the “radical innocence” of America. The young hero has to discover for himself the meaning of America, not as a geographical place but as an idea, a dream, a vision, a prophesy and a betrayal. It shows how every “new American” has to re-discover America for himself, if the idea of America with its “radical innocence” is to survive.
