George Forbes returns to his boyhood village of Talsall in Devon, eventually to retire with his wife, Cythnia. He moves from London to escape from the High Life and to settle down in the countryside by working from home.

However, George soon finds himself within the maelstrom of murder, even rising to four unexplained deaths, three in quick succession. The retired colonel Armistice is the former owner of the cottage George now inhabits and he dies mysteriously in the graveyard of St Michael’s church in Talsall. The story unfolds as George attempts to solve the mystery of multiple deaths, the plot seeing twist upon twist before reaching its dramatic conclusion.
