God consciousness is knowing that God watches over a person, rewarding good deeds and punishing bad deeds.
If your rewards are in this life, it does not mean that you wont be rewarded in the hereafter, nor does it mean that you will be rewarded similarly in the hereafter. Being rewarded in the earthly life does not mean that you deserve, or merit, such a reward – either in this life or in the hereafter.
Similarly, if you get punished in this life, it does not mean that you will be punished in the hereafter, because that would give you a good reason to become depressed and hopeless. It does not also mean that your punishment in the hereafter is going to be similar in such a way that you would endure this punishment so that you would be able to get accustomed to it for the life to come.
The punishment of the hereafter is more severe and “painful”.
