The First Person on Scene (FPOS) course is an advanced pre-hospital training programme designed to equip individuals who may be the first to arrive at the scene of a medical or traumatic emergency with the knowledge, skills, and decision-making capacity required to manage the situation effectively until professional emergency medical services arrive. The course occupies an intermediate position between basic first aid training and professional pre-hospital care, providing a structured and evidence-based approach to early emergency intervention.

The primary focus of the FPOS course is the development of a systematic method for scene assessment, patient evaluation, and immediate life-saving interventions. Participants are trained to prioritise personal and environmental safety, recognise hazards, and establish scene control before initiating patient care. A strong emphasis is placed on structured assessment models, such as primary and secondary surveys, which enable rapid identification of life-threatening conditions and guide appropriate clinical decision-making under time-critical and high-stress conditions.

Throughout the course, learners acquire practical competencies in basic life support, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the use of an automated external defibrillator, as well as in the management of airway compromise, breathing difficulties, severe haemorrhage, and shock. The training also addresses the initial management of traumatic injuries, such as fractures, spinal trauma, and soft-tissue injuries, with the aim of preventing further harm and stabilising the patient. These skills are taught within a realistic operational context, often using scenario-based simulations that reflect the unpredictable nature of pre-hospital emergencies.
