Capuchin monkeys belong to the family Cebidae and are grouped into two primary genera: Cebus (gracile capuchins) and Sapajus (robust capuchins). This distinction, recognized in the last few decades, is based on morphological differences, genetic analysis, and variations in behavior. Gracile capuchins generally have slimmer bodies, less prominent brow ridges, and lack the tufted hair seen in their robust counterparts, while robust capuchins are stockier with strong jaws and noticeable tufts above their heads. Understanding this classification is essential for proper identification and for recognizing differences in diet, behavior, and habitat preferences.
There are several notable species within these two genera. Among the gracile capuchins, the white-faced capuchin (Cebus capucinus) is perhaps the most famous, easily recognized by its white facial fur contrasting with its dark brown or black body. The weeper capuchin (Cebus olivaceus) has lighter fur with a grayish tone and is named for its vocalizations that sound like crying. In the robust group, the tufted capuchin (Sapajus apella) stands out for its muscular build and high intelligence, while the critically endangered blonde capuchin (Sapajus flavius) is notable for its golden coat and restricted range.
