They claimed nuclear power would be the answer to Britain's energy security crisis and a new generation of modular reactors cheaper and quicker to build. But cronyism, corner cutting and a freak storm in the Bristol Channel combine to create a nuclear disaster and a radioactive fallout cloud which literally cuts the United Kingdom in half. Reporter Jack Makepiece is not just involved in a failed campaign to prevent the power station being built but he finds himself at the epicentre of the storm when it blows up.
As Prime Minister Gordon Strathyre struggles to control the state of emergency his country is plunged into, he becomes increasingly reliant on the support of the military to maintain both law and order and his own grip on power. The normal rules of government and society are superseded by autocracy and martial law. Life will never be the same again in Britain after the event they said could never happen, actually happened.
