The significance of Carlile’s Masonic work is that it was the first printed exposure of rituals beyond that of a Master Mason, and thus gives the first standardised look at the much treasured Royal Arch ceremony. In this work, edited by Benjamin Cartwright, is both this earliest known version of the Royal Arch ritual and that of the Past Master's; as during the time of Carlile, a candidate of the Royal Arch HAD to be a past Master of a Lodge.
