In an era when few men and no women could vote, huge numbers gathered under the banner of the People's Charter to demand their fundamental political rights.

The Chartist Movement of the late 1830s and 1840s mobilised millions of people through a series of 'monster' meetings, petitions, economic boycotts, strikes and even armed uprisings, and many of its leading figures suffered imprisonment and transportation to the penal colonies of Australia as a result.

The forty-two pen portraits in this book tell the life stories of some of these men and women and their involvement in Chartism, drawing on the author's Chartist Ancestors website and the decades of research which lie behind it.

About the author
Mark Crail is an independent researcher specialising in the Chartist Movement and related nineteenth-century radicalisms. He is a journalist by trade, and has run the Chartist Ancestors website and its associated blog since 2003.
