On July 16, 2021, Francis issued the motu proprio Traditionis Custodes on the use of the Roman liturgy prior to the 1970 liturgical reform, by which he practically suppressed the motu proprio Summorum Pontificum that Benedict XVI had promulgated on July 7, 2007.
