A proud father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, he is also a U.S. Army veteran who served from 1965 to 1968. He also served with the 1st Air Cavalry in Vietnam from 1967 to 1968.
After his military service, he attended the University of California, Berkeley (1970-1973) and UC Hastings College of the Law (1973-1976). He served as a Deputy District Attorney for San Joaquin County from 1978 to 1985, then entered private practice, where he has worked since 1985.
When he's not practicing law, he enjoys traveling, collecting art books, and listening to jazz-passions that reflect his thoughtful, disciplined approach to life and writing.
