This book is a weave of fiction, typical fact and actual fact. It tells the story of a real dog who was rescued from the streets of Eastern Europe. The story is inspired by observing the dog's behaviour now, and noting some of the particular traits he displays which indicate a former trauma. The story is a possible explanation of how these behavoural traits were formed. As a result the story up to the time he arrived in the United Kingdom is fictional set against a plausible background.
The final chapter is factual but the identity's of the people involved are obscured.
Alongside this, the story deals with several ethical, emotional and moral issues that a young person has to face today. It speaks about injustice, despair and anger, fear and trauma. It covers the issues of loyalty, love, making the best of one's circumstances, survival against the odds, right and wrong choices and the pain of loss.
The story ends in a place of safety, security and unconditional love. It talks about being loved for the first time when you don't really think you are worth it and the slow building of trust to know you have reached your forever home. It shows how some memories will not go away and everyone concerned must adjust to accommodate this.
It is a story of the triumph of love and belonging over fear and pain.
