The Holland Lop rabbit originated in the Netherlands during the mid-20th century as a deliberate effort to create a compact lop-eared rabbit suitable for companionship and exhibition. Prior to its development, lop-eared rabbits were primarily larger breeds, such as the French Lop and English Lop, which required significant space and specialized care. Dutch breeders recognized a growing demand for a smaller, more manageable lop-eared rabbit that retained the distinctive ear carriage and gentle appearance of larger lops while being better suited for household environments.
The foundation of the Holland Lop breed is credited primarily to Dutch breeder Adriann de Cock, who began his work in the late 1940s. His objective was to combine the lop ears of the French Lop with the compact body size of smaller rabbits, particularly the Netherland Dwarf. This selective breeding process required careful planning, as the traits being combined were genetically complex and did not always express consistently in early generations.
