After spending the last few years in prison, Travis Hawk wants nothing more than to go straight and to pursue his dream of becoming an artist, but just about everyone he encounters sees him as the perfect fall guy. There are two San Diego detectives who accuse him of a string of burglaries and the murder of a wealthy philanthropist, a well-to-do doctor who invites him to draw a mural for a fundraiser, and Mexican banditos and a Mexican police chief who would like to relieve Travis of jewels they are convinced he has stolen. Then there is his conniving wife, who pretends to have found religion but instead has found a lust for other men and wants to send Travis back to prison. With everyone playing him for a fool, Travis shows he has a few tricks of his own and resorts to his former life as a jewelry thief as he seeks to find the real killer of the murder he is accused of committing.
