Chár is a young adult in his late teens from the Suri people of Southern Ethiopia. His village is destroyed and his people massacred for the exploitation of mineral wealth and global investment. Chár is one of seven who escape the massacre, is rescued by French tourists visiting the region and taken backk to France. Although his Suri ideas and values are already formed, he is nevertheless little different to a child both in speaking French and in understanding this strange new world.

The novel then concerns his adventures in the West, making friends, meeting partners, finding lovers, discovering Western values and eventually what had brought about the destruction of his home and massacre of his people.
