Learn Latin Through Three Roman Worlds

The road widens again. This time it leads from the theatres of Hispania to the battlefields of Dacia.

Learn Latin with Gens et Gloria 3: A Zygia ad Apollonium continues the advanced Latin novel series during the reign of Trajan. Three stories unfold side by side: the adventures of a travelling theatrical company, a Roman officer at war, and the quieter life of the family he has left behind.

Written for advanced Latin readers, the novel moves between different voices and styles while remaining at approximately the C1 stage within the Latina Laeta progression.

From Baetica to the Dacian Frontier

In Baetica, Dracontius and his fellow performers take to the road. Their world is one of theatres, quarrels, jokes, improvisation and unexpected encounters. At its centre is Zygia, a sharp-tongued Greek woman whose place in the company-and in Dracontius's life-is not easily defined.

Far to the east, Lucius Vibius Florus has been drawn into Trajan's war against Dacia. From Viminacium and the Danube to mountain roads, military camps and the approaches to Sarmizegetusa, he experiences Roman warfare from within: uncertainty, exhaustion, danger and the responsibility of command.

Meanwhile, Cassia and Cornelia remain within the world of family and household. Their chapters offer another perspective on Roman life, shaped by relationships at home and events taking place far away.

Comedy, war and domestic life alternate throughout the novel, each with its own pace and voice.

Learn to Read Different Kinds of Latin

A Zygia ad Apollonium is the third novel in Gens et Gloria, the advanced continuation of the Latina Laeta reading programme.

At this stage, the challenge is no longer simply understanding complex grammar. It is learning to move comfortably between different kinds of Latin. Dracontius's chapters are lively, comic and theatrical. Lucius's military narrative is more direct and historical. Cassia's world is quieter and more intimate.

An English introduction explains these changes of register and offers practical guidance on adapting the way you read. As throughout the series, the emphasis is on extensive reading: follow the narrative, use context, tolerate what you do not immediately understand, and keep moving.

Against the background of Trajan's Dacian Wars, the novel brings together Roman comedy, military life, travel and the everyday concerns of a Roman family.

Learn Latin with Gens et Gloria 3 is suitable for advanced Latin students, independent learners, teachers looking for full-length Latin fiction, readers continuing the Latina Laeta and Gens et Gloria series, and experienced Latinists who want a historical novel they can enjoy in Latin.

Professor Terence Tunberg, University of Kentucky, writes:
