This book is an attempt to gather, in one place, the life and legacy of the men and women who have shaped the inner life of Asia, from the forest sages of the Upanishads to the Zen masters of Japan, from the wandering Sufis of Delhi to the Thai monks of the forest tradition. It is not an exhaustive account. Any single one of these figures has inspired shelves of scholarship, and several have entire religions built around their teaching. What this book offers instead is a doorway: a short, honest portrait of each teacher's life, the core of what they taught, and why it still matters.

The idea for authoring this book came from a simple, recurring frustration: readers drawn to a single teacher, Ramana Maharshi, say, or Thich Nhat Hanh, rarely have an easy way to see where that teacher fits against the wider landscape they emerged from. A devotee of Kabir may never encounter Milarepa; a student of Transcendental Meditation may have no idea that Goenka's Vipassana centres descend from a related but distinct Burmese lineage taught only a generation earlier. Each tradition tends to be documented richly on its own terms and rarely alongside its neighbours. This book was written to close some of that distance, not by flattening real differences between traditions, but by placing them within reach of the same two covers.
