During a routine faculty meeting, Mima's thoughts drift toward the upcoming Thanksgiving weekend - until a sudden shift in the room pulls her back. Silence falls. Every gaze turns toward Joseph, who has risen, deliberate and heavy, as if bearing the weight of what he's about to say. His message has nothing to do with academic business. Joseph has a dear friend in desperate need of a kidney. The room responds with raw emotion, and something about the announcement reaches Mima not just intellectually but viscerally - a premonition, almost. She doesn't yet know it, but her world is about to be turned upside down.

Ms. Mima grew up in Berkeley, California, the daughter of two French immigrants. She had a tumultuous albeit exciting childhood and young adulthood, attending a year of boarding school in France in High School when she was proving too difficult for her parents to manage. She eventually worked at Chez Panisse Restaurant to put herself through college at U.C. Berkeley. . Until recently she was busy raising children, teaching French and Culinary Arts on the Santa Cruz coast in California, but she is now enjoying the next chapter of her life living in Mazatlan, Mexico where she is striving to become trilingual, enjoying cooking more than ever, and simply enjoying the life in that beautiful country as an "economic immigrant" aka expat.
