Where Is Wisconsin?

Rival football fans call Green Bay Packers fans cheeseheads. Though intended as an insult, Ralph Bruno embraced the nickname because he liked cheese and was proud that his home state of Wisconsin made so much of it. Cheese making is one of many immigrant traditions the people of Wisconsin celebrate.

was helping his mom cover her couch with fabric when he had an idea. He cut a couch cushion into a triangle to look like a wedge of cheese. He added holes and painted it yellow. He turned it into a hat. Then he wore the cheesehead hat to a sporting event. It attracted so much attention that his friends wanted to be cheeseheads, too. He started a trend!

Cheesehead hats became famous. Packers fans wear the hats to the team’s National Football League (NFL) games. Today, people from Wisconsin are proud to be called cheeseheads—even if they don’t wear a cheese-shaped hat!
