Inhaltsangabe

What happens when the world shuts down at the exact moment your life falls apart?

In March 2020, KT Roland walked into a doctor’s office alone and heard the words that would divide her life into before and after:

Multiple myeloma. Stage 3.

Outside the hospital walls, COVID-19 was bringing the world to a standstill. Inside them, she was beginning a fight for her life.

Day Zero is the raw, deeply personal story of facing an incurable blood cancer during one of the most isolating moments in modern history. From chemotherapy and painful injections to stem cell collection, high-dose melphalan, and an autologous stem cell transplant, Roland takes readers beyond the medical terminology and into the moments that rarely make it into patient brochures—the fear, exhaustion, dark humor, loneliness, and determination it takes to keep moving forward when your body and your world no longer feel familiar.

COVID changed everything. Appointments were attended alone. Hospital doors separated patients from the people who loved them. Her husband, Lance, could walk beside her only so far before he had to leave her behind. There was no waiting room filled with family. No village gathered at the bedside. There were text messages, phone calls, hospital hallways, and long nights when survival became something she had to face largely on her own.

Then came August 24, 2020—Day Zero.

The day her own collected stem cells were returned to her body.

The day the medical team reset the clock.

The day she began counting again.

But Day Zero wasn't the end of the story. It was the beginning of learning how to live after everything had changed.

Told with vulnerability, honesty, and unexpected humor, Day Zero is not a story about pretending to be fearless. It is about being terrified and continuing anyway. It is about love when the person who desperately wants to protect you is forced to stand on the other side of the door. It is about losing control, finding strength in unlikely places, and discovering that survival isn't a single moment.

Sometimes survival begins at zero.

For anyone who has faced cancer, transplant, chronic illness, caregiving, isolation, or a life that suddenly became unrecognizable, Day Zero is a reminder that reaching zero doesn't mean you've reached the end.

Sometimes, it's where the rest of your story begins.

Von der hinteren Coverseite

In March 2020, just as the world was shutting down, KT Roland heard the words that would divide her life into before and after myeloma. Cancer had already taken hold of her body, and there was no time to wait for the world to become less frightening. While everyone was learning how to survive a pandemic, she was learning how to survive cancer.

Months of chemotherapy, injections, stem cell collection, and uncertainity led to August 24, 2020—Day Zero. The day her own stem cells were returned to her body. The day doctors reset the clock and began counting her life again from zero.

But a stem cell transplant during COVID was more than a medical procedure. Hospital doors closed behind her. Visitors disappered. Her husband, Lance, could only walk beside her so far before she had to continue without him. Inside an eerily quiet hospital room over looking Indianapolis, with little more than her clothes, phone, and laptop, she faced the most dangerous days of a treatment largely alone.

Day Zero is the deeply personal story of what happens when survival becomes measured in blood counts, hallway walks, text messages home, and the strength it takes simply to make it through another day. Told with raw honesty, reflection, and unexpected humor, it is not just a story about cancer or transplant.

It is a story about the moment everything is stripped away—and you discover what remains.

Sometimes surviving means starting over at zero.

Aus dem Klappentext

What really happens after you arrive at the hospital for a stem cell transplant?
Day Zero takes readers beyond the medical terminology and into the experience itself—from conditioning chemotherapy and the return of stem cells to crashing blood counts, transfusions, complications, isolation and the long wait for those numbers to finally begin climbing again.
Written from inside a transplant room during the extraordinary circumstances of 2020, this is not a medical guide. It is the story of what those procedures, numbers and milestones felt like to the patient living through them.
For anyone facing a stem cell transplant—and for the families trying to understand what their loved one may experience—Day Zero tells the part of the story that a treatment brochure can't.
