Rolly Jeffers is a 65-year-old retired school teacher who is struck with a calling to write and sing songs about his faith; this seemingly innocuous vocation causes friction within his marriage and his church. He wrestles to understand his own motivation. Is it devotion or ego? Is it a calling or is it simply his own hubris? His wife, his best friend, Jose, and his pastor, Father Hans Cheever, all weigh in on the matter:
"I'm not asking you to stop making music, Rolly. I'm asking you to look at what it's costing."
"I know what it's costing," he said.
"Do you?" She gestured at the brochure on the table. "I picked that up three weeks ago. You haven't asked me about it once."
"You're my best friend, Rolly. But I can't stand on this porch and watch you burn down the house."
The line went quiet. Rolly sat with the phone pressed to his ear, listening to the faint static, the sound of Jose breathing on the other end.
Father Cheever approached the pulpit. He adjusted his glasses, cleared his throat, and let the quiet gather for a long moment before he spoke.
"My dear friends," he began, "today I wish to speak with you about reverence."
