Think Like a Top Scorer: ACT English & Reading goes directly into the questions that keep costing points after the basic rules are already familiar to the students.
On English, punctuation begins with clause structure. A comma cannot hold two independent clauses together by itself. A semicolon can. An opening although or because can turn an otherwise complete clause into a dependent one. An -ing word can look like the main verb while leaving the sentence without a working verb. A long phrase between subject and verb can make a plural noun look like the subject when the true subject is singular. An opening modifier attaches to the noun that follows it, which is why a sentence can sound perfectly natural while describing the wrong thing.
The harder English questions move beyond grammar. A sentence can be grammatically sound and still fail the paragraph. Add/delete questions depend on what the paragraph is trying to accomplish. Placement can turn on chronology, pronoun reference, repeated nouns, or what a sentence sets up next. Transitions begin with the relationship between ideas: result, contrast, concession, example, continuation, or comparison. Verb tense may be controlled by a time marker several sentences earlier.
Reading is developed at the same level. If researchers say something may have contributed to an outcome, an answer saying it caused the outcome has increased the certainty. Evidence from twelve coastal towns does not support a conclusion about every coastal community. An unchanged result does not establish that an intervention had no effect. A group average cannot describe every person in the group. Association cannot establish a causal mechanism from the numbers alone.
Paired passages are kept separate long enough to identify who owns each claim. Two authors can accept the same evidence and disagree about its explanation. One can accept another writer’s observation while rejecting the conclusion drawn from it. Function questions ask what a quotation, example, sentence, or paragraph is doing in the argument, rather than simply what it says. Visual questions require the variable, group, unit, and time point to be identified before a claim about level, change, association, or cause can be judged.
The closest answer choices often differ by a single feature: scope, certainty, source, grammatical structure, logical relationship, or paragraph purpose. The book trains students to find that feature instead of repeatedly comparing two answers that merely sound plausible.
Timing is handled question by question. Clause boundaries and agreement can often be settled locally. Placement, purpose, paired-text, and broader evidence questions deserve a wider reading window. A second look has a specific job: locate the antecedent, identify the clause boundary, verify the source, check the scope, or compare the exact feature separating the final two choices.
The book includes complete ACT English and Reading instruction, advanced close-answer practice, vocabulary in context, quick-reference review, test-day strategy, and two full-length practice tests.
Bonus online practice: a QR code inside the book provides access to a full-length ACT practice exam at CollegePrepRoom.com, built around current ACT section timing and content targets.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Many students lose ACT English and Reading points even when they know the grammar rule or understand the passage. The problem is often not a lack of knowledge. It is knowing what the question is testing, finding the evidence that controls the answer, and rejecting choices that sound reasonable but do not fully work. This book teaches that process.ACT English questions are decided by grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, organization, clarity, and relevance. ACT Reading questions are decided by what the passage states, supports, implies, and accomplishes. In both sections, the correct answer must be supported by the text. That makes every question a decision that can be studied. One answer works. The other three fail for identifiable reasons. A wrong answer may be too broad, only partly true, unsupported, grammatically incorrect, unnecessary, or inconsistent with the surrounding sentence or passage. The explanations in this book do more than identify the correct choice. They examine all four answers, show which rule or evidence controls the question, and explain exactly why each wrong answer fails. Over time, students begin to recognize the same wrong-answer designs when they appear in new questions. The book begins with a diagnostic test, then moves through focused instruction, guided practice, mixed question sets, timed sections, and five full practice tests. This progression helps students build accuracy first and then apply the same methods under real test conditions.Students are also taught to review missed questions by cause, not only by number. That makes practice more useful because it reveals whether points are being lost through a grammar weakness, a reading error, a rushed decision, or a failure to eliminate an attractive wrong answer. This book is for students who are willing to work but want that work to produce better results. Its purpose is simple: to help students make stronger decisions, avoid preventable mistakes, and turn more of what they already know into correct answers on ACT English and Reading.
