Paul the Apostle wrote from prison to a church being bothered by religious teachers with false teachings. He refuted the false ‘gospel’ by using their own terms to describe the true God in enriching helpful language. He went on in four chapters to describe their old lifestyle and encourage the new lifestyle as believers in Jesus Christ. The accompanying personal note asks his friend Philemon to kindly receive back a slave that robbed him. It is a dynamic case study in redemption by grace.
