The Theft
A sacred nulla-nulla — a 4,000-year-old ceremonial club carved from black wattle heartwood by an ancestor called "the one who stands between" — is stolen from the Mossman Gorge Cultural Centre's restricted collection. It encodes the deepest law of the gorge: the law of stillness before striking, the law of depth.
The ThievesProfessor Gerald Claypan (archaeological conservator) and his wife Desta Claypan (high-end replica maker) executed a coordinated heist. Gerald served as a visible decoy at the front of the building while Desta used an undocumented rear-wall access point (found in 1987 heritage plans) to swap the genuine artefact for a carefully weighted replica in under a minute. Their plan: mould the original, sell it to a Singapore collector, and profit from replicas.
The ProtagonistAlira Robinson, 18, Kuku Yalanji woman, living independently in North Cairns. She feels the gorge's distress from 71 kilometres away — a frequency tuned through years of her grandmother Jeanie's teaching. She is also a gifted golfer (seven handicap) whose understanding of "the line" in golf mirrors her understanding of Country: you cannot force it, only feel it and commit.
